xAI Grok Models

Dawn can use xAI as an AI provider so workspace agents can run on Grok models alongside the other model families available in the workspace.

What xAI Support Provides

xAI support adds Grok models to the Dawn model catalog for workspaces that configure the provider. Provider choice remains per agent, so you can evaluate Grok on one profile without changing the rest of the workspace.

Use Grok when a team wants to compare model behavior on real workspace tasks, create an experimental agent, or route a specific workflow to xAI while keeping other agents on OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, or other configured providers.

Configure xAI

  1. Open Workspace settings as the workspace owner.
  2. Open AI Providers.
  3. Add or edit the xAI provider configuration.
  4. Enter the xAI API key.
  5. Choose the Grok models that should be available in this workspace.
  6. Save and validate the provider.
  7. Edit an agent profile and select the desired Grok model.

If the AI Providers tab is not visible, the current workspace plan may not allow owner-managed provider configuration.

Rollout Pattern

Start with one Grok-backed agent:

  • create a dedicated evaluation agent or clone an existing agent;
  • keep source assignments narrow;
  • test against real tasks the team understands;
  • compare answer quality, tool use, latency, and cost;
  • move production workflows only after the model earns that role.

Changing the model does not change Dawn’s permission model. The agent still uses the same prompt, skills, memory access, connected sources, files, and channel bindings.

Troubleshooting

  • Grok models do not appear: confirm xAI is configured, validated, and the model is allowed for the workspace.
  • The agent cannot select xAI: confirm the current plan allows workspace AI provider management.
  • The model behaves differently: review the agent prompt and skill assignments. Different providers can require different prompt calibration.
  • Unexpected provider billing: xAI runs use the configured xAI provider path. Check the workspace AI provider settings and provider dashboard for usage.
